Some Names of Mother Kali

Just as Mother Kali is all-encompassing and unfathomable, so too are Her names innumerable.
She is called Karalika (Sanskrit: करालिका, karālikā) — “The Terrifying,” and also Karalasya (Sanskrit: करालास्या, karālāsyā) — “The One with a Fearsome Face.” But to whom does She appear terrifying? Would a devoted child ever see their mother as frightening? Of course not.

Her fearsome visage is for sinners, for those destined to lose their pitiful lives either by Her crescent-shaped sword, Her trident, or Her unyielding mace.

Kali is rightfully called Kamahartri (Sanskrit: कामहर्त्रइ, kāmahartri) — “The Destroyer of Desires.”
Why?  Because human desires are usually selfish. They stem from the Ego, are saturated with it, and lead to suffering. Their dwelling place is the head. Kali severs the head, stripping a person of their Ego and dispelling their illusions. The ultimate truth of life is Death.

Only a fool clings to their desires, seeking to alter their life for the better. A wise person entrusts their entire existence to the Great Mother, along with the fruits of their labor. To the wise, success and loss are one and the same. Such is the world, where everything rushes toward death the moment it is born.

You build a house, and before even starting, you notice the materials aging and decaying. Why refrigerate food? To delay its inevitable rot. A child is born, and they are taught to celebrate birthdays. But what is a birthday if not a step closer to death, where the body, the house, the family, and all possessions must be left behind?

Mother Kali has the power to free a seeker from karma and the endless cycle of rebirth, granting liberation from suffering. But one must seek Her with all their heart, dwell in Her presence, and remember Her constantly. Then, the miracle will surely happen.

Kali is known as Kartri (Sanskrit: कर्त्रइ, kartri) — “The Creator, the Creative Force,” as Kritya (Sanskrit: कृत्या, kṛtyā) — “The Very Act of Doing,” and as Karyakari (Sanskrit: कार्यकरइ, kāryakari) — “The Power of Action in Every Act.”
This means that no action exists without Kali, whether one knows it or not. If a person directs the force within them toward any action driven by selfish motives, they generate karma, the result of which is suffering. Only one who surrenders all actions to Kali and renounces the fruits of their labor is free from karma. Kali favors and protects such a person.

Kali is also called Kakini (Sanskrit: काकिनइ, kākini) — “The Goddess of the Fourth Yuga.” It is Kali who governs this universal space-time cycle, the Kali Yuga, whose ultimate goal is the purification of all souls from sin and egoism, leading to their union with the Supreme. Since egoism is the root of all sin, Kali’s mission is to destroy this root during this temporal cycle.
